  120. Because of size constraints we are forced to leave some of the glitter
  121. out of this shareware versions, but it is still VERY MUCH a FULL
  122. working fax program with feature not seen anywhere else.  We left off
  123. things like decorative bitmaps, several of the sample cover page logo
  124. files, FaxBook imports and a few other things that will not impede your
  125. use of FaxMail. All of the above mentioned and more will be in your
  126. registered version.

  128. We are working full time on improving and upgrading FaxMail for Windows
  129. based upon the feedback from you and other users.  So...before you
  130. install, look at the date on the files inside of the ZIPed file.  If
  131. the date is more than a week old, you may want to call and get the
  132. latest version.

  150. LEGAL INFORMATION:
  151. If you have a registered version of FaxMail for Windows you may *NOT*
  152. share the registered version with others.
  153.  
  154. FaxMail for Windows is shareware.  This means you have a chance to test
  155. the performance FaxMail for Windows before committing yourself to
  156. buying it.  You have a one month legal trial.  After one month you must
  157. pay for FaxMail for Windows or discontinue its use.

  159. Only the unregistered version of FaxMail for Windows may be distributed
  160. freely, and no fee may be charged for it except a nominal copying fee.

  164. IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
  165. While converting printer output to a fax, FaxMail will need to create
  166. and use a temporary file called "TOFAX" and then delete it when
  167. finished. This file will be it the root of the drive FaxMail is
  168. installed on.  Be sure this root-directory does not have the maximum
  169. number of files in it.
  170.  
  171. FaxMail will not be able to <CONVERT TO FAX> if any of the following
  172. are present on the drive that you installed FaxMail on:
  173.  
  174.  *If you have the maximum allowed files in that root directory.
  175.  *If you have a directory called TOFAX on the drive.
  176.  *If the drive is full.
  177.  
  178. NOTE: The reason for a small file name in the root directory is that
  179. not all programs with printing capabilities support paths.
  180.  
  181. If you are currently using another Modem-Program, remember that they
  182. can not run concurrently on the same COM-Port.  Disabling a fax program
  183. may be as easy as not loading it or you may have to remove one or more
  184. lines from your AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI.
  185. Typing rem ahead of a line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS will
  186. disable it. Example:

  193. To disable a line in an *.INI (WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI) file, place a ;
  194. before the line to be commented-out.  Example:

  201. If your old Fax-Program loads from the Windows-StartUp-Group as you
  202. enter Windows, you will have to move it's ICON out of your
  203. Windows-StartUp-Group by grabbing it and dropping it in another Group.

  205. If you load the wrong Fax/Modem-Driver the worst that can be expected
  206. to happen is that the Fax/Modem-Driver might not load or the program
  207. might hang or fail to operate, and perhaps your modem might be left in
  208. Fax mode and require manual resetting(turn it off and back on).  Since
  209. information about models that don't work with this program will aid in
  210. correcting unsuspected problems, we would appreciate any information

  222. Definition:
  223. FaxModem Wizard COM-Port/Fax/Modem-tester, COMTEST.COM.  FaxModem
  224. Wizard not only tell you what kind of UART is present on each of your
  225. four COM-Ports but what IRQ it is using.  It will generate a text file
  226. called COMTEST.COM that you can read later.  This file can be e-mailed
  227. to ElectraSoft for analyses.

  256.      to all warning message.

  260. FAX/MODEM INSTALLATION:
  261. Read "USING COMTEST.COM" first...

  263. (IMPORTANT: Read but don't do this unless you are installing or
  264. reinstalling a Fax/Modem)

  266. Definitions:
  267. COM, Communications-Port (1 - 4).
  268. IRQ, Interrupt-ReQuest (0 - 15).
  269. External Fax/Modem, is placed *ON* a COM-Port (UART).
  270. Internal Fax/Modem, *REPLACES* a COM-Port (UART).
  271.  
  272. A majority of the people I give tech-support to have a hardware
  273. conflict due to improper Internal Fax/Modem installation!
  274.  
  275. NOTE: An External Modem is placed *ON* an existing COM-Port (UART)!
  276.  
  277. NOTE: An Internal Modem is a UART is and *REPLACES* a COM-Port (UART)!
  278.  
  279. If you are having problems with a Modem, read the above lines until you
  280. comprehend and understand them.
  281.  
  282. Installing an External Fax/Modem:
  283. Plug one end of the COM cable into your Fax/Modem and the other end
  284. into a vacant COM-Port.  You will have to know what COM-Port and what
  285. IRQ you plugged into so you can let the software know during software
  286. installation.
  287.  
  288. Installing an Internal Fax/Modem:
  289. When installing an Internal Fax/Modem, be sure you disable the
  290. COM-Port (located on your IO-Board) you are going to replace.  Then;
  291. before installing the Internal Fax/Modem, test, with the opening screen
  292. of COMTEST.COM (comes with FaxMail for Windows and *MUST* be run from
  293. DOS. It will *NOT* work while in Windows.), to be sure the COM-Port
  294. really is disabled, and then, AND ONLY THEN, are you ready to install
  295. the "Internal Fax/Modem".  Not doing this properly is the overwhelming
  296. major reason for Modem and other computer problems that to the average
  297. person seem to have no relationship to their modem, but it does!  If
  298. you are installing on COM2-IRQ3, the COMTEST.COM opening screen should
  299. look like this BEFORE you install the Fax/Modem.
  300.  
  301. COM1-IRQ4:
  302.  UART (16450 Chip) or Equivalent detected.
  303. COM2-IRQ*:
  304.  No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.
  305. COM3-IRQ*:
  306.  No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.
  307. COM4-IRQ*:
  308.  No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.
  309.  
  310. Then you are ready to set the jumpers on your Internal Fax/Modem to
  311. COM2-IRQ3 and insert it into a vacant slot; thus replacing the COM2 UART.
  312.  
  313. You can use DEBUG.EXE to help install Modems, but it is not as actuate
  314. as COMTEST.COM (see Note 5).
  315.  
  316. If you are reinstalling a Fax/Modem on a different COM-IRQ, keep in
  317. mind that you may have to reinstall or run setup on all the software
  318. that is presently using the Fax/Modem.
  319.  
  320. If COM1-IRQ4 and COM2-IRQ3 are in use, I would suggest one of the
  321. following configurations:
  322.  COM3-IRQ5,
  323.  COM3-IRQ7,
  324.     or
  325.  COM3-IRQ2
  326. If we would have found COM2 unused we would have configured like this:

  341. FaxMail for Windows will supports COM1 through COM4 on IRQ0 through
  342. IRQ15. But...Before these addresses can be used, your
  343. "COM-Port/Fax/Modem" must first support the configuration and second
  344. you must properly configure said device.

  346. Never skip a COM-Port as the system will go into "conflict-convulsion"
  347. from time to time.  To find a vacant IRQ, run something like
  348. SYSONFO.EXE, etc.  Here is some information on IRQs in the
  349. IBM-Compatible.  They are: IRQ0 - IRQ15.  N/A means not normally
  350. available for your Fax/Modem.

  386. As you can see, if IRQ4 is used by COM1, you have to find another IRQ
  387. for COM3.  If you have a COM1-IRQ4 and you use COM3 you will need to
  388. use an alternative IRQ.  The same goes if you are going to use COM4 and
  389. you have a COM2-IRQ3.

  391. Note 2:
  392. It is best to use COM1-IRQ4 or COM2-IRQ3 for Fax/Modems, as they were
  393. originally and specifically set aside for communications.  Experience
  394. has shown me that some Fax/Modems do not preform as well on COM3 and
  395. COM4 using IRQ5, IRQ7 or IRQ2.

  397. Note 3:
  398. By the way, the problem with this and most system tests, such
  399. as MSD.EXE, is that they tell you what is suppose to be or what is
  400. normally on an IRQ. For instances, when I ran this test, as you can
  401. see, it says that "LPT1" is on IRQ7.  The fact is I have a Rockwell
  402. class 1,2 Fax/Modem on COM3-IRQ7.  When I ran COMTEST.COM I got the
  403. following results:

  438. If your computer has a built-in COM1-IRQ4 and COM2-IRQ3, you can
  439. disable either COM1-IRQ4 or COM2-IRQ3 and then set your Fax/Modem to
  440. that COM-Port and IRQ.  This is done be getting out your manuals and
  441. moving the jumpers or contact the company you bought your computer and
  442. Fax/Modem from.

  444. Note 5:
  445. At Segment 0040, Offset 0000 DOS keeps a table of ports starting with
  446. your COM-Ports.  The BIOS and DOS assume that you know that you can not
  447. skip a COM-port or reuse an IRQ.  If you do, it will raise havoc with
  448. your system.  If you skip a COM-Port, your system will compress the
  449. COM-Port table thus making it useless to any program that depend on it.
  450. For instance, if you have a UART on:

  479. To keep from damaging electronic parts, always turn your computer off
  480. when removing/replacing hardware, and place your hand on the metal
  481. chassis before removing/replacing hardware.

  485.            Example of a conflict and how to resolve it
  486.  
  487. Lets assume you have a mouse on COM1-IRQ4 and a modem on COM4-IRQ3.
  488.  
  489. You have a hardware conflict.  You should never skip a COM-Port as the
  490. system will go into "conflict-convulsion".
  491.  
  492. Your computer has a COM-Port table at real-mode Segment 0040h, Offset
  493. 0000h, 0040:0000.  It assumes that you did not skip a port, and if you
  494. did, it will compress it down to where, in this case, your COM4 is
  495. entered into the COM-port table at the location reserved for COM3.
  496. When you go into Windows, Windows looks at the COM-Port table and
  497. thinks you have a COM1, COM2 and COM3.  When it goes to access COM3,
  498. bad things happen, because it is not there.
  499.  
  500. FaxModem Wizard, COMTEST.COM, is included with FaxMail for Windows. It
  501. will tell you what, if anything, is on each of your four COM-Ports and
  502. which IRQ each COM-Port is using, COM?-IRQ?.  It will give you a
  503. written report about your Modem.
  504.  
  505.  Exit Windows and Run COMTEST.COM.  In this example the results will
  506.  look like this:
  507.

  545.      this is the case with your computer, get out the jumper-sheet that
  546.      came with your computer's I/O board, and move the jumpers so that
  547.      COM2 is disabled.

  549.   4. Run FaxModem Wizard and look for the following results:

  616. 2"} will work with nearly all of the Fax/Modems derived from the
  617. "Rockwell Class 2 Accelerator Kit".  Generic Class 2, Zoom Class 2,
  618. ZyXEL Class 2, and Dallas Class 2 Fax/Modem-Drivers are all Class 2
  619. Fax/Modem-Drivers.  There are a lot of "Class 2" variations, so, if
  620. your "Class 2" board does not work with one, it may work with another.

  640. If your Fax/Modem is not listed, look for an alternate
  641. Fax/Modem-Driver. An Internal Fax/Modem-Driver can be used to drive an
  642. External Fax/Modem, and an External Fax/Modem-Driver can be used to
  643. drive an Internal Fax/Modem.  The name is not important.  For instance,
  644. the AT&T class 1 will work on many other class 1 Fax/Modems.  Choosing
  645. the wrong Fax/Modem-Driver will not harm Anything.

  647. The files in this package are modified to your specifications during
  648. installation and *WILL NOT* work properly if simply copied into your
  649. working directory.  You *MUST* use the INSTALL.EXE or configuration

  756.   If the Fax/Modem-Driver does not load at when you turn on your computer
  757.   it could be because FaxMail for Windows installs its Fax/Modem-Driver
  758.   at the top of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and other drivers can cancel
  759.   it out.  If this happens to you, move the Fax/Modem-Driver command:

  763. HELPFUL HINTS:
  764.                         "Silent Answer"
  765. Silent Answer requires the support and cooperation of the remote
  766. sending Fax/Modem/Machine with your receiving Fax/Modem.  If the
  767. sending Fax/Modem/Machine does not support "Silent Answer" by sending
  768. the "CNG" tone, you will lose that Fax!  Please read *all* of this area
  769. before using "Silent Answer".  If you still want "Silent Answer", here
  770. is what it does and how to implement it.
  771.  
  772. Silent answer let one telephone line be used for two purposes;
  773. receiving FAXes with the Fax/Modem, and receiving voice calls with an
  774. answering machine or telephone.  When set to this mode, the Fax/Modem
  775. lets your answering machine answer all incoming calls. If it detects
  776. Fax "CNG" tones, it routes the call to FaxMail for Windows.  Otherwise,
  777. it just sits silently on the phone line while you or your answering
  778. machine takes the call.
  779.  
  780. When the phone rings and after the second ring the Fax/Modem will start
  781. monitoring the telephone line.  If it detects a Fax tone, it will
  782. receive the Fax.  If it does not detects a fax tone, it will do nothing.
  783.  
  784. Silent Answer hardware installation
  785. When installing the Fax/Modem, DO NOT plug the answering machine into
  786. the telephone jack on the back of the Fax/Modem.  Instead, do one of
  787. the following:
  788.  
  789. a. Plug the answering machine and Fax/Modem into different wall jack
  790.    (i.e. jacks in different rooms).
  791.  
  792. b. Plug the answering machine into a wall jack and the Fax/Modem into
  793.    the answering machine.
  794.  
  795.  
  796. c. If your answering machine has some kind of phone-jack switching;
  797.    use this method. You must locate the two devices on separate
  798.    extensions to make silent answer work correctly.  This means you
  799.    can not plug the answering machine into the Fax/Modem or vise
  800.    versa.  You can split a single extension with a duplex jack
  801.    adapter.  Radio Shack commonly carries these, part number 279-357
  802.    for $4.49.
  803.  
  804. Also, if you have an older answering machine that does NOT
  805. automatically turn itself off when it detects that a person or the
  806. Fax/Modem has answered the call, you need a $7.95 adapter from
  807. Radio Shack, part#43-107.  This adapter disconnects the answering
  808. machine from the phone line when the call is answered.  It goes
  809. between the answering machine and the wall jack.
  810.  
  811. Note:
  812. The device that is picking up the line initially, must answer
  813. after, and not before, the second ring.  This means you should
  814. set it to 3 for best results.  If no other device picks up the
  815. line by the time the number of rings that FaxMail for Windows
  816. is set to is reached, FaxMail for Windows will answer it and
  817. process a Fax.
  818.  
  819. To activate Silent Answer
  820. Load the FaxMail for Windows "Control" program and click on the
  821. <System> Button, <Setup> Button and on the Silent Answer <Check>
  822. Button.  Set the number of rings until we answer to four and set your
  823. answering-machine to three rings.  If the Silent Answer <Check> Button
  824. is inactive and gray, your Fax/Modem does not support Silent Answer.
  825.  
  826.  
  827.            How to enable auto-load (registered version only)
  828.  
  829. When you boot-up, you have a choice as to whether you want to load the
  830. FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver or not.  If you plan to always
  831. load the FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver, you can place y or Y
  832. behind the Fax/Modem-Driver.  Here are two examples:

  880. program called Telemate, and it's name is TM.EXE.  The following Batch
  881. File will Disable the "Fax/Modem-Driver" load "Telemate" and when you
  882. exit the BBS program (Telemate) it will "Enable" the Fax/Modem-Driver
  883. so you can resume FAXing.  At the DOS Prompt:

  1023.      to this noncritical error you will respond <Ignore>.  NT will
